DEEP

DEEP

For reasons I can’t explain, I only seemed to work on the arrangement of this tune late at night. Maybe it was the laid-back hours, maybe the rainy season, but the sounds I layered together took on a mellow, almost dreamy tone.

The whole thing began with a simple, deep bass line, and from there it grew. I was just doing what I usually do, playing around with tracks which is always a good way to spend time.

One day, Michael Thomas, an old friend and bluesman at heart, stopped by Level 3 Mania. While he was there, he heard the foundation tracks that would become "Deep". He picked up an old Strat, the one with the noisy pickups—nothing beats the character of an old Strat with noisy pickups when the room is quiet late at night—and started playing along. I quietly recorded him without his knowing, and after three passes, the result is what you now hear. It was all very spontaneous and totally in the moment. There is very little mixing on the track so as to capture its essence. As I mentioned, very spontaneous. I tried to allow the music to live as it should, on its own, in order to completely represent the joy of a memory, in space and time.

In a small way, what you hear is the difference between night and day.

Take a minute and go "Deep".

I recently (11-27-24) came across a second recording of "Deep" with an alternate ending. I found this version while digging through some old hard drives. It closes with a guitar solo on that same old Strat with the noisy pickups It's in the Internet Archive link located at the top of the page.

Enjoy.
