Morphing Into “Get Up

I have always had deep respect for the courage and intellect of Angela Davis. Her writings are superb, and her perspective has meant a great deal to me. Her fearlessness is an example I will never forget.

At the same time I feel the same about Carl B. Stokes and Oliver Nelson. Mr. Stokes’ poetry and readings moved me deeply, and Mr. Nelson’s musical creativity continues to inspire me to this day.

One day, the phrase get up kept circling in my mind. Around that same time, I came across Angela Davis’ lectures on the Internet Archive. The carousel of thoughts quieted, and a light broke through. The chains had been broken. That moment led me to put this piece together as an offering of respect and admiration for these remarkable figures.

In a bit of irony, “Sit Down” morphed into “Get Up.”
